Polar Hub — officially the Tianjin Center for Excellence in Climate Change Response — was founded in May 2017. It is China’s first public-interest organization dedicated to glacier conservation and climate change response through nature-based solutions such as scientific expedition, citizen science, and science communication. Polar Hub is an official partner of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the operating organization of the Polar Science Expedition Specialized Committee of the China Association for Scientific Expedition.

Polar Hub has carried out more than thirty scientific exploration, climate change research, and ecological restoration projects across China and in the Arctic and Antarctic, cooperating with the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, UNESCO, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and other institutions on numerous science exploration and science communication programs. It has set multiple world records in scientific exploration and collected scientific samples from all three of the planet’s poles. Its projects span the Antarctic continent, the Arctic ice sheet, Greenland, and the Tibetan Plateau, covering glaciers, oceans, mountains, and low-carbon advocacy.

Polar Hub’s stories on climate change, biodiversity, and polar glacier conservation have reached more than 1.3 billion people. Documentaries, new-media science columns, photography exhibitions, and popular science books at home and abroad have recounted how Polar Hub ventures deep into the Antarctic, the Arctic, the Tibetan Plateau, and snowy wilderness to conduct scientific expeditions and citizen science programs. It has also hosted events associated with the UN Climate Change Conference and the UN Biodiversity Conference, amplifying China’s voice on climate action and telling the story of China’s environmental protection to the world.
